This has become a pattern so far during this series. It was Quinton de Cock who started the show on day 2 for South Africa. This left-hander pounced on the visiting bowlers to get his 3rd Test Century. Starting the day with 297 for 6 on the scorecard, de Cock helped his team to reach close to the 400 landmark as they were all-out on 392. With the 3rd ton of Test career, Quinton also achieved 1000 runs in Test cricket. He hit 11 boundaries on his way to an attacking hundred at a brisk pace of 80 plus strike rate.

It was a positive start for Lankans when Rangan Herath dismissed the nightwatchman Kyle Abbott in the 2nd over of the day. It was 356th wicket for Herath. He surpassed the legend Sri Lankan seamer Chaminda Vaas with that wicket. Herath took 77 matches to pick 356 wickets whereas Vaas played 111 matches for his 355 wickets. Herath has become the 2nd highest wicket-taker in Tests for Sri Lanka. Only Muttiah Muralitharan is ahead of him with 800 wickets in 133 Tests.

Lahiru Kumara claimed his first five-for in Test. It is the third Test he’s playing. This youngster ended up with a figure of 6 for 122 runs.

Sri Lanka’s reply was tormented by Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander. Both the bowler took 4 wickets a piece. Philander completed the landmark of 150 wickets in 39 Tests during this innings while Rabada completed his 50th Test wickets playing 13 matches.

The visitors were all-out for 110 runs as the hosts took a 282 runs lead and chose to bat again instead of imposing the follow-on. Proteas ended day 2 with a huge lead of 317 runs and the situation for the visitors is highly alarming as 3 days of play were still remaining.

Today visitors need to show some extraordinary performance and they also need some help from fate. Only a miracle can save this game for Sri Lankans.
