Almost in defiance, Pakistan showed everyone what batting slow really looked like, with nine runs scored off the first ten overs – and just 58 in the session’s 30. They shouldered arms to West Indies’ bowlers as if they were batting out the fifth day to salvage a draw. The run – if you can call not scoring a run – included five maidens on the trot, making an early start by half an hour almost needless. Why bother when the game just struggled to move on?

Azhar Ali completed his 14th Test hundred and Misbah-ul-Haq was on 8, having consumed more deliveries (56) than he did when he made the joint-fastest Test century.

The Pakistan captain walked out to replace his retiring team-mate Younis Khan, who was lbw to Holder while falling over trying to play a flick. West Indies formed their second guard of honour, and then outdid their generosity by dropping Misbah on 0. He was squared up by a ball that shaped away and the resulting outside edge was dropped by the wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich. It was his second drop of the Test so far, and it left Holder, the bowler and his captain, buckling at the knees.

West Indies persisted with the old ball for a while, intent on keeping the scoring rate down. The spinners enjoyed it as well, with Devendra Bishoo beating the outside edge repeatedly. Eventually, Shannon Gabriel took the new ball in the 89th over, and that provided a fresh signal to Pakistan to retreat further into their shell.
