Pune picked a bowling attack with two legspinners, both overseas players, in Adam Zampa and new signing Imran Tahir. With Smith and the allrounder Ben Stokes occupying the two other overseas slots, there was no room in the side for Faf du Plessis.

Mumbai picked a three-man seam attack with two New Zealanders, Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan, supported by Jasprit Bumrah and the allrounder Hardik Pandya. Their other two overseas players were Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard. They sprang a bit of a surprise in the spin department, leaving out Harbhajan Singh, their most capped player, and picking just the one spinner in Krunal Pandya.
