Joe Root was fluent with his 11th Test half-century against India. He went for 88 of Ravindra Jadeja. While Root was making the Indian bowler disappointed in the first session, Moeen Ali from the other end was very shaky and looking like to get out any time. But eventually, the left-hander got rid of the early starter and went on to score his all-important 5th Test ton. He ended day 1 being not out for 120.

Opening the innings after winning the toss, Alastair Cook (10) and Keaton Jennings (1) could not give the visitor a good start. England was 21/2 and one could be sniffing the familiar batting collapse for them in this series. But Root and Moeen Ali steered the innings slowly to a solid position.

It was a good batting wicket despite the fact of Cyclone Varda took place 4 days ago. The groundsmen worked hard to make the field playable and it seemed to be all ok. Like the typical Indian pitch, it will remain a batting friendly track till day 3. After that, it will slow down and turn. Invariable bounce will be seen there as well.

Ravindra Jadeja claimed 3 wickets with his finger spin, While Ashwin went wicket less in the whole day 1. These two troubled Moeen Ali a lot initially. Ali has been beaten in numerous occasion of both Jadeja and Ashwin. But somehow he managed to survive the initial burst till lunch. After that he came as a different Moeen Ali in the second session and got going to his way of 120*. The visitors ended the first day on 284/4.
