Azhar Ali remained unbeaten on 205 runs which helped his team to get a total of 443/9 where captain Misbah decided to declare the innings. Azhar Ali became the 1st Pakistani batsman with two scores of 200 or more in a year. In October this year, he struck an unbeaten 302 runs against West Indies.
He also became the first Pakistani to hit a double ton in Australia. Majid Khan’s 158 at the MCG in 1972-73 was the previous highest. Overall, Azhar recorded only the fifth instance of a Pakistan batsman making a double-hundred against Australia. The previous one was by Younis Khan in Abu Dhabi in 2014-15.
Azhar also became the first visiting opener to hit a double-hundred at the MCG. The previous highest was Virender Sehwag’s 195 in 2003-04. Overall, Azhar is only the third opener to make a double-ton at the venue, Justin Langer and Bill Lawry are the others.
He is the fifth opener to make two or more scores of 200-plus in a year, before Azhar. Sehwag was the previous one, with his 201 not out and 319 in 2008. The others to accomplish this are Graeme Smith, Marvan Atapattu, Gordon Greenidge and Glenn Turner.
