Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc prised out England’s openers after they made a solid start to a hefty chase on the fourth day at Adelaide Oval. Set 354 for victory – a target that would be their all-time highest successful Test run-chase if achieved – England began by moving along to 53 without loss, which might have caused a few jitters in the Australian camp after Steven Smith failed to review an lbw appeal that would have sent Alastair Cook on his way in the fourth over.

But a better review decision from Smith ended the partnership when Lyon pitched one in line to Cook and straightened it enough to win the verdict of the ball tracker, if not the on-field umpire, when Cook was on 16. The first neglected review had come off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood, who swung one in from around the wicket; presumably the Australians felt the ball was sliding down leg side, but the ball tracker showed it crashing comfortably into leg stump.

Cook had been solid if not quick-scoring, but his opening partner Mark Stoneman was much busier and scored his first 28 at a run a ball, putting a little bit of pressure back on to the Australians. However, on 36, he Stoneman pushed outside off and sent a catch to Usman Khawaja at gully, immediately justifying Smith’s decision to bring Starc on to replace Lyon, who had been bowling extremely well.
